BRFC 1989/90 v Newcastle (h) 24/3/90
High-flying Newcastle Utd visit high-flying Blackburn Rovers in what turns out to be a painful encounter for SuperAtko. Marvel at the camera work as the focus moves from the Manxman to the Darwen End and then the centre spot in short order...

Rovers take on Pompey at a gloomy midweek Ewood...the 1st goal from Mark Atkins was a cracker...apparently..! Once again Simon Garner demonstrates his value to Rovers...how on earth did he never play in the top flight ?

Wolves come to Ewood with Mark Venus in their ranks & centre-forward Steve Bull looking to improve his chances of making England's World Cup squad. No mention of Simon Garner in despatches...(disgracefully...).

Try telling the kids of today that football used to be mad in the 80's & they won't believe you. Show them this & they might... Rovers do some amazing Rovers things in a frankly bonkers match at Ewood. Don't blink, you'll miss something crucial...

Middlesbrough visit Ewood without an away win all season. Rovers are unbeaten at home. Middlesbrough are playing a centre back up front who only ever scored 16 goals in over 200 games in the league for Boro. Tony Mowbray is in the Middlesbrough defence. Strap yourselves in...

Rovers aim to capitalise on a great start with a home fixture against Oxford Utd. Watch out for some classic commentary, filming & video effects...especially the goal replays (straight out of Miami Vice..!) & spelling the name of one Rovers hero quite incorrectly. The last five minutes is quite extraordinary and should not be missed. Laugh at Brian Horton chatting with Don Mackay at the end for...

During the game, all the talk was of how Simon Garner had broken the club scoring record whilst dismantling City ruthlessly. Only later did it become apparent as to why this day would tragically never be forgotten.

I was there!
Do you have any extended footage of this game perhaps showing the Nuttall street stand?
My first Rovers game this I can’t believe there’s footage 😃 I watched the game with my dad, apparently spent more time looking at the trains and seagulls but I remember it. We sat on the wooden streets of Nuttall street stand and I remember walking out the corner of the ground after it finished.
#waggottout he's killing the club
My first away game 11 years old. Superb
Brian (Harry eyebrows) Roberts....Wrote in his book that while playing at Brum together. Andy Kennedy was the only player he'd ever come across that Washed & blowed his hair in the changing Before the game..😮
Who edited this match?, i was there in the blackburn end as a young lad & loyal rocers supporter... remembering a very competitive match with rovers giving it a good go & some creative football putting the wind up united.., not just the 2 united goals & pundits papping on with themselves... Bbc hasn't changed much..
I was there, such happy times.
If Man Utd score at West Ham this don’t exist
If my Aunt had bollox he'd have been my Uncle
Outstanding Ian Rush 👏
Motty was a great football commentator ! especially when he was covering Rovers games.
Now.That is how to play football.😊
Back in day Blackburn were a top 4 club & Arsenal were mid tables
I went to this game as a 15 year old Londoner. Bunked off the last lesson at school, caught the bus to Euston, train to Crewe, a Glasgow bound train from Crewe and changed at Preston, then a local train from Preston to Blackburn (if I remember correctly!) The match was live on Match of the Day on a Friday night. Apart from the result, I remember one of the soccer magazines that year (Match Weekly or Shoot! I think) doing a survey of the best pies at football grounds and Ewood Park came out on top. They weren't wrong either! There was a small kiosk at the top right of the away end and I had 2 pies before the match and another 2 at half-time! I think the song "who ate all the pies" was made for me that night!
Great pie stall... The smell of hot bovril & fresh baked pies wafting around a frosty ewood park brought a smile to many a frozen face & cheered us up no end at half time... I remember the swift unexpected cold breeze blowin across the pitch up the concrete steps & up everyones trouser leg stood in the blackburn end which must have doubled the sales of a pie n a bovril at the half time whistle.... To buy 4 pies u must have been a proper rich lad & not local... Haha
What was with that Rovers kit against Wolves? 39:40
I went to this... 12 years old....
Bear that in mind what the commentator said any entitled Man Utd fans who've found their way here. Blackburn Rovers where winning FA cups before there was even a Man Utd.
As a Trelleborg fan, this is our biggest piece of history in this club
That’s how shit your football is
I was at the game. some you win , some you lose, But There's only one Blackburn Rovers !
I never got my head around the fact it never hosted euro 96 games and forest did
Very good point that I’ve never thought about before
What a season ! cracking manager, great team spirit, Simply a winning combination.
Simon Garner is now earning a living down south as a paint and decorator. these current footballers have no such engagements .lucky for them,
The first time I heard the song oh Manchester is wonderful was after this game when walking through the streets of Blackburn back to our coach
I was in the away end
I'm still baffled for what the penalty was given for
I was in the Riverside that night, what a game.
My first game I was 5 years old. The good old days.
What's up with the text at the beginning? Is this from a TV broadcast, or where do these old tapes come from?
Yup…the official club vhs of the game…it’s a fabulous message 😁
Would you look at the state of that pitch.
🎶 P𝐫O𝕞O𝓢m
I was on that day! Remember every goal and Newell being sent off
Come on u blues 🔵
This was arguably the best City performance of the 1990’s.
Language Tony 🤬
Came from "mediocrity and virtual obscurity"...
Great days.
Great win that, remember that game really well. Dalgleish said afterwards “where have they been all season, when they can come here and play like that” and now we are experiencing teams “turning up against us”. Great win all the same on a dreadful pitch
A day when, looking back at what was happening in Sheffield, football didn’t matter
"I shouldn't think he'll be spending it on toffee"... really? Is that what 80s kids ate in England?
32 Years on. The Amateurish production and graphics. Concussion protocol for the keeper? No chance! Crunching tackles. A sand pit of a pitch towards the Darwen End. Kernaghan unplayable! Tommy Balls, Pelle Menswear, Leo Carpets. Stapleton and Johnrose headers. Handbags. The commentary is just gold. Couldn't be more Bolton if he tried.
I was there, then Coventry the week after with my Dad. RIP Dad.
Best set of goals I’ve ever witnessed.
Best set of goals I’ve ever witnessed.
It's almost like he missed that penalty deliberately? I wonder lol how Rovers players react to winning the penalty all scratching heads no punching the air I wonder if a brown envelope was involved? Take it easy and try and not score anymore? It's been mentioned for years they didn't want to go up for financial reasons but this was way before the premier league and all that meant moneywise who knows what the truth is ?
Gayle looked pretty elated after scoring his goals, though ... and he always seemed to place penalties in that kind of way, only not always hampered by as much mud.
So why would they then press so hard for a 3rd goal ! Utter tosh !
The missed penalty killed us
Garners last two goals were absolute class finishes
Great win for us that night although we thought we did a big favour for the Rags for the title but thankfully Blackburn did it MCFC
Wow. What an ending to snag that point.
It is fascinating to see this once again, many happy memories of those great days 🙌🏻
im a liverpool fan but i could'nt stand neil ruddock, a fat waste of space
